The aim of the study was the assessment of tolerance and efficacy of the sublingual pollen vaccine Perosall T (Biomed, Poland) in preseasonal therapy of pollen allergy.
The vaccine was given through 3 consecutive preseasonal periods to 20 patients (8 women and 12 men, aged 16-55) suffering from pollen allergy to grasses. The maximal dose reached 5000 PNU in each succesive course of the therapy. Control groups consisted of: - 10 patients with pollen allergy receiving subcutaneously specific immunotherapy with pollen vaccine Catalet T (Biomed, Poland) - and 10 patients with pollen allergy remaining without immunotherapy.
In 30% of cases treated with Perosall T light symptoms of pollen allergy appeared during immunotherapy and the vaccine had to be administered individually. After 3 years of the therapy in 90% of patients was observed shortening of symptoms length, decrease in symptoms score, as well as disappearance of asthma attacks present earlier. In two out of 10 patients treated with Catalet T the vaccine had to be administered individually because of local reactions. After 3 years of treatment the improvement based on the same criteria as in the patients treated with Perosall T was observed only in 6 patients.
In 7 patients out of ten treated only symptomatically during pollen season the natural development of illness was observed, manifested by increase and elongation of symptoms as well as by appearance of cough and asthma attacks.
The observations allow to conclude a good tolerance and efficacy of sublingual therapy with Perosall T in patients with pollen allergy to grasses. The results are better in comparison to those in control groups. In this kind of immunotherapy, similarly as in others, a good contact of patients with the treating doctor is required.
